Radical Reconstruction In The South. Republicans saw this law, and three supplementary laws passed by congress that year, called the reconstruction acts, as a way to deal with the disorder in the south. Passed much desirable legislation and badly needed reforms such as establishing adequate public schools and launching public works.

During radical reconstruction, which began with the passage of the reconstruction act of 1867, newly enfranchised black people gained a voice in government for the first time in american history, winning election to southern state legislatures and even to the u.s. Radical reconstruction state governments in the south. The 1867 military reconstruction act, which encompassed the vision of radical republicans, set a new direction for reconstruction in the south.
